Guardian Lions Pair

In Chinese folklore, Guardian Lions, often referred to as Foo Dogs, held a special role as protectors, with a strong presence at the entrances of various Chinese establishments to provide security and safeguarding. This tradition has historical roots dating back to the Late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) and the Early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD). Remarkably, these Foo Dogs still stand as sentinels at the entrances of the Imperial Palace, bearing testament to their enduring significance.

Crafted with great care, Foo Dogs are meticulously handmade using thick-walled brass, employing the time-honored technique of sand casting. These exquisite works of art are then meticulously hand-finished and subjected to chemical oxidation to accentuate the natural green patina, which is a characteristic feature of oxidized brass.

Typically, Foo Dogs are arranged in pairs and placed on both sides of an entrance, a tradition rooted in the belief that they work together to protect and ward off negative energies. These remarkable guardian sculptures come in various sizes, ranging from those small enough to serve as paperweights to larger versions suitable for adorning gardens and outdoor spaces.
